Punch or jab

Published by frederick at 9:48 am under Uncategorized Edit This

Welcome back to our on going series of Mixed Martial Arts vs. Traditional Martial Arts.  We are currently discussing the various techniques that have proved effective in both.  Today’s topic is the front punch.

Every person in America feels they can do a front punch.  All you do is ball up your fist and let it fly.  This seems to be something people put a lot of stock in. Just because they are throwing their fist they think they are going to inflict damage.  This is not necessarily true.  We have seen many men in Mixed Martial Arts take a punch or two or three to their heads and bodies and just keep on coming.  This is because a lot of people don’t train to punch properly.   The power of a proper front punch first and fore most comes from the hips either wise you are just throwing a powerless jab.  You want to put your entire body behind a punch without losing your balance.  Another common mistake is “winding up” your strike.  A lot of people will bring their fist up to their head or behind it before they strike.  This is what we in Martial Arts call telegraphing.  The person about to be hit can the see the punch coming from a mile away.  Giving them ample time to duck or weave.  A proper punch which has been executed in many Mixed Martial Arts matches and on the street by many Traditional Martial Artists strikes like a snake out from under a rock.  It is quick usually from the belt or if your in a ready stance you strike with the back arm.  There should be some rotation of the wrist as to create torque and a more powerful punch. Be sure and rotate your hips as you lean slightly into the punch.  The last and final step to successfully completing a punch is your distance.  Make sure you don’t have to lean to far out there to connect with the punch as this will throw you off balance and make sure your far enough away so that you don’t lose any power.  So remember,  hips, torque, distance.  Baring these in mind will help you complete a successful punch and not a jab whether your studying Traditional Martial Arts or competing in Mixed Martial Arts.
