Mixed Martial Arts vs. Traditional Martial Arts Pt. 2

Published by frederick at 9:08 am under Uncategorized Edit This

I know yesterday I said I was going to discuss differing technique between MMA and TMA, but I think I need to elaborate on a much more fundamental difference between the two.                                                                                      Like I said yesterday MMA is a sport.  It takes an incredible athlete to walk into the octagon and know at the very least he’s likely to tear or break one of his appendages.  These men put hours of training time into what they do and should be complimented on their abilities in boxing, kickboxing, and, grappling.  Not to say that students of TMA don’t put in hours of training. They do as I can tell you from personal experience.  The difference between MMA and TMA is the desired goal.   In MMA the goal is to win the fight.  To make sure you walk out of the octagon with a better fight record than what you walked in with.  Thus proving you are a better fighter than your competitors.  This is goal of any sport not just MMA.      This is not something promoted in TMA.  Fighting is something you train for in all martial arts, but in TMA the only reason you fight is if your life is in danger or your family’s life is danger.  You don’t put hours of training into TMA to beat other people to a bloody pulp.  You put hours of training in so that you can maintain your body and a healthy life style.  You practice as if you will have to fight, but in all honest most black belts have no desire to prove themselves in a street fight or any other fight for that matter.  As a black belt I find it much more important to return to my family every night than I do about proving my belt. TMA is about passing down what the previous chapters have preserved for the teacher to pass down.       There are many more difference still to come in my ongoing debate of MMA vs. TMA.  I feel that this is probably one of, if not the biggest, difference between these two arts.  Click in tomorrow where I will begin discussing effective techniques for both MMA and TMA.
